When patients come to me after trying every over-the-counter product and several rounds of antibiotics with little improvement, isotretinoin is often the conversation we end up having. It’s the most effective acne treatment available, but it’s also the one patients have the most questions and misconceptions about, so I want to discuss what it actually involves.
Most people’s first instinct with acne is to handle it themselves. A new cleanser, a spot treatment from the drugstore, maybe a serum recommended online. For mild breakouts, that approach can work.
When acne isn’t responding to what you’re doing at home, the next step is finding professional help. But “professional help” can mean very different things depending on where you go.
If acne products aren’t working, it’s probably not a matter of fault, it’s a limitation of what over-the-counter options can do. Persistent, painful, or scarring acne deserves professional attention, and the sooner there’s an accurate diagnosis, the faster real results follow.
