Aftercare
Aftercare matters just as much as the treatment itself when it comes to hyaluronidase. Following a few simple guidelines in the days after your appointment helps the enzyme work effectively and keeps recovery smooth.
Immediate Aftercare
For the first 12 hours, avoid touching, rubbing, or applying skincare products to the treated area. Keeping the area clean and undisturbed helps hyaluronidase do its job and lowers the risk of irritation.
Applying ice can help reduce swelling. Wrap an ice pack in a thin cloth and apply it to the treated area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Avoid placing ice directly on the skin.
Activities to Avoid
- Strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for at least 24 hours, since increased circulation can add to swelling and bruising
- Facial massages, microneedling, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments for at least 7 days, since these can interfere with the enzyme’s action and irritate the skin
- Alcohol for 12 hours, since it can increase swelling and bruising
Skincare During Recovery
Stick to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Follow with a moisturizer suited for sensitive or post-treatment skin. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is especially important, since sun exposure can worsen irritation and slow healing.
Managing Common Side Effects
Mild swelling and bruising are common, especially in sensitive areas like the lips, and typically resolve within a few days. Acetaminophen can help with discomfort. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen, since they can increase bruising.
Some asymmetry during the healing process is normal as swelling resolves unevenly. This usually settles within about a week.
When to Contact Your Doctor
Contact your provider if redness, tenderness, or swelling persists or worsens after three days. Seek immediate medical attention for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, or severe dizziness.
FAQs
What is hyaluronidase, and why is it used?
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. It is commonly used to correct overfilled, uneven, or improperly placed dermal filler. Learn more about hyaluronidase treatment.
What should be avoided after receiving hyaluronidase treatment?
Avoid excessive sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, strenuous exercise, and facial treatments like massage or microneedling for at least a week, as these can interfere with recovery.
How long does it take for the effects of hyaluronidase to wear off?
Most patients see initial improvement quickly, with results continuing to develop over several days as swelling resolves and the enzyme fully breaks down the filler. Individual recovery times vary.
What are the potential side effects of hyaluronidase?
Mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site are the most common side effects. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, so discuss any concerns with your provider beforehand.
