Is Sunscreen Safe?

A study published in JAMA found that four common sunscreen chemicals, avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule, showed up in the bloodstream after just a single application. For anyone who applies sunscreen daily, that finding can sound alarming. Here’s what it actually means, and what it doesn’t.

What the Study Found

Researchers had participants apply sunscreen as directed and then measured blood levels of the active ingredients over several days. All four chemicals were detectable in blood after one use, and levels remained measurable for some time afterward. The study measured absorption, not harm. It didn’t show that any of these ingredients cause disease at the levels found.

Should You Stop Using Sunscreen?

Absolutely not. Skin cancer rates continue to rise, and unprotected UV exposure is a well established cause of skin cancer and premature aging. Skipping sunscreen because of an absorption study trades a proven risk for an unproven one. The better move is choosing a sunscreen formula that fits your comfort level.

Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreens

Sunscreens fall into two broad categories:

Chemical sunscreens use ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octocrylene to absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat. They tend to feel lightweight and blend in easily, but they’re the ingredients tested in the JAMA study.

Physical (mineral) sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays away rather than absorbing them. These are the only two active ingredients the FDA currently classifies as GRASE (generally recognized as safe and effective) for sunscreen use, based on the available safety data. They are not meaningfully absorbed into the bloodstream.

What “Not GRASE” Actually Means

It’s worth noting that the FDA hasn’t ruled the other 12 chemical filters unsafe. Its position is that there isn’t yet enough long-term safety data to formally classify them as GRASE, so they remain legal and widely used while more research is gathered. That’s a regulatory gap, not a confirmed hazard, but it’s reasonable for anyone who wants to minimize systemic absorption to opt for a mineral formula in the meantime.

Choosing a Mineral Sunscreen

  • Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide listed as the active ingredient on the label.
  • Choose a broad-spectrum formula with SPF 30 or higher.
  • Mineral formulas can leave a slight white cast; tinted versions blend better on most skin tones.
  • Reapply every two hours, and more often after swimming or sweating, just as with any sunscreen.

The Takeaway

The JAMA findings are a reason to be an informed shopper, not a reason to skip sun protection. Anyone concerned about systemic absorption can switch to a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and get comparable protection without the same absorption profile. A skin cancer screening is also a good idea for anyone who hasn’t had one recently, regardless of which sunscreen they use.
