How to Choose a Botox Injector

Botox is offered almost everywhere now, and patients tell me the choice feels overwhelming. I understand why. Botox means injecting delicate facial muscles, and small errors in technique or dosing produce asymmetry, drooping, or that unnatural look everyone is trying to avoid. Here is what I tell patients to look for, including the patients who are not coming to me.

Product Authenticity

This one has become urgent. The FDA has confirmed that unsafe counterfeit versions of Botox turned up in multiple states and were injected into people for cosmetic purposes, with adverse events serious enough to send patients to the hospital. Those products came from unlicensed sources, often at prices that looked like a bargain.

So ask. Verify that your provider uses authentic, FDA-approved Botox Cosmetic obtained from authorized distributors. Ask about sourcing, lot numbers, and expiration dates. Any reputable practice will answer without hesitation. If a provider gets cagey about where the product came from, that is your answer. Leave.

The same logic applies to alternatives. There are legitimate FDA-approved neurotoxins besides Botox, such as Xeomin. What is not legitimate is an unapproved product marketed as a cheaper equivalent.

A Sterile Medical Environment

Botox belongs in a sterile, medical-grade setting, not a spa, salon, hotel suite, or living room. A real medical office protects against infection, and just as importantly, means a physician is on site who can manage anything unexpected. The FDA's counterfeit cases clustered in exactly the settings that lack that safety net.

A Real Consultation

Before I inject anyone, I go through medical history, current medications, allergies, and facial structure. That is not a formality. It is the foundation of a result you will be happy with, and it is where I catch the things that change the plan.

Be skeptical of anyone who skips this, or who has a standard treatment that everyone gets. A cookie-cutter plan is a sign the provider is working from a template rather than from your face.

Honest Communication

The right provider will talk through realistic outcomes, pricing, side effects, and aftercare plainly and without pressure. Some of the most useful conversations I have are the ones where I tell a patient that Botox is not what will fix the thing that bothers them, and that something else, or nothing, is the better answer.

Patient Reviews, Read Properly

Look for consistent themes rather than star counts. Natural results, precision, attentive follow-up, and clear communication showing up repeatedly is a good sign. Reviews that keep mentioning feeling rushed, or getting a generic treatment, are telling you something real about how that practice runs.

The Same Rules Apply Beyond Botox

Everything above holds for other injectable treatments too, and if anything it matters more with fillers, where a misplaced product can cause vascular complications. I've written separately about why filler results vary so much between injectors.

The Bottom Line

Choosing carefully makes all the difference, and the criteria are not mysterious. Product you can trace. A setting with a physician in it. A consultation that actually evaluates you. If a provider clears those, you are in reasonable hands. If they do not, no discount is worth it.
